The climate
in Hong Kong is sub-tropical, but tends to be temperate for nearly
half the year. The reason for this is because the huge land mass
of Asia generates cold fronts that
blow from the north during the winter months.
It is not
uncommon for temperatures to drop below 10°C in urban areas during
this time.
In the summer months (June, July and August) this is reversed and
the seasonal winds blow from the south bringing hot humid tropical
air.
The autumn
months of October
to December bring sunny dry weather with cool breezes and low humidity, and by many people these are
considered the best months of the year.
The winter months of January and February are often cloudy with
occasional cold fronts. March until May is usually very pleasant,
but there is the possibility of rain and humidity in these months.
June tends to be the wettest of the summer months, and from July
to September you can expect high humidity with temperatures between 26°C to 31°C.
September is
the month during which Hong Kong is most likely to be affected by
tropical cyclones. Hong Kong is not in an earthquake zone.
As Hong Kong
is notorious for its high humidity during the summer months, careful
consideration should be given when deciding whether to bring any
precious pieces of wooden furniture or oil paintings.
