Happy Valley was one of the first areas to be occupied by the early European arrivals. The Happy Valley Racecourse, in the heart of the area, has been in use since 1846, and the area comes alive on Wednesday nights when race meetings are held.

Happy Valley is a popular area with expatriates and the area has a sprinkling of modern high-rise blocks, but most of the apartments are of the older low-rise style. Some of the apartments have green views across the hillside and others overlook the Happy Valley Racecourse.

Situated between Wanchai and Causeway Bay business districts, Happy Valley has good transport links, and easy access to shopping facilities. Alongside the buses and minibuses, trams also travel around the Happy Valley racecourse and into the Central downtown area. There are many shops and restaurants in the area, ranging from small Chinese bakeries to modern restaurants serving European cuisine.

There are several international schools located in and around this area including, the Japanese International School, French International School, Hong Kong Academy, and Quarry Bay Primary School (part of the English Schools Foundation (ESF) group of schools).
