Moving with children can present
families with a number of issues, and one of the most important is choosing
the right school for your child.
Fortunately, Hong Kong has a large number
of excellent schools and varying styles of education are available. The
education in Hong Kong is of a very high
standard.
Education is compulsory and free for the local Cantonese speaking
population up to the age of 15 years. Very few expatriates send their
children to the local schools as the need to speak, read and write
Cantonese at home as well as at school preclude most.
There are a number of international schools that provide a service for the
expatriate community. These schools work within the curriculum of the
individual countries, for example American, Australian, Canadian,
French, German-Swiss, Korean and Japanese. Some of these schools also offer
an English-speaking stream which runs along side their own national
curriculum, and is more suited to English speaking children with no prior
knowledge of another language.
Many of the international schools offer a debenture system and companies
that hold school debentures will receive priority placements. The
debentures are used to fund the capital and maintenance costs of the
schools and can be redeemed, without interest, once the student leaves.
One of the biggest providers of international-style education is the
English Schools Foundation (ESF). The Foundation was set up in 1967 and has
19 schools - 5 secondary schools, 10 primary schools, 3 kindergartens and
one school for children with special needs. There are currently 55
different nationalities within the schools, and over 95% of ESF students go
on to universities worldwide.
When you visit a school for the first time, whether ESF or any of the other
international schools, they will advise you whether there is place within
the grade for your child/children. Most ESF schools require a
reasonable level of both spoken and written English, and they will request
an interview with your child.
ESF schools are regionally zoned
and therefore will be unable to confirm a placement until you are able to
confirm that your address will be within the school's catchment
area, your official paperwork is in order, and school reports from your
child/children's previous school have been received. All schools will try
their best to accommodate a new student but many have waiting lists, and
therefore we would always advise early contact with the schools of your
choice.
