The general driving rules of Hong Kong follow the British system, with right-hand
drive cars driven on the left-hand side of the road. If you are a
resident of Hong Kong, it is an offence to
drive on a foreign licence. Holders of licences from the US,
EU, Australia, New Zealand and Japan
can apply for a Hong Kong driving license
without taking either a road or theory test. It is best to apply for a
Hong Kong driving license as soon as you
receive your Hong Kong Identity Card (HKID) if you intend to drive.

The local Chinese tend to upgrade their cars very regularly and new comers
are always amazed at the high number of very expensive cars seen on the
roads in Hong Kong. This is good news for
new arrivals because there is a very good used car market in Hong Kong.
There is a lively second hand car trade between expatriates that
are leaving and those arriving, and there are often bargains to be found on
the noticeboards at supermarkets. In addition, the classified section of
the local English language daily newspaper, the South China Morning Post
(SCMP), carries a good selection of used cars for sale, and you can find a variety to choose from at www.asiaXpat.com.
There are also some
reputable second-hand car dealers in Hong Kong.
